Welcome to Your Council Chambers!

Understanding the Council Chambers

Entering the council chambers can often feel intimidating, especially if you’re not familiar with the people you’re about to meet. These individuals have been elected to advocate for the city’s best interests, and they’re here to serve you. Below is a guide to help you navigate who’s who in the council chambers.

Meet Your Council Members

Ward Council Members (Photo 1-6)
Each number in the photo corresponds to a council member representing one of the city’s wards. If you’re unsure about your ward or who represents you, visit our dedicated section at everyvoiceutica.org to find detailed information about each councilperson and the specific areas they cover.

City-Wide Representatives

At-Large Council Members
Utica is also home to three at-large council members who represent the entire city. These members are your voice too, and they’re committed to addressing city-wide concerns and initiatives.

Key Roles in the Chambers

Central Table Participants
The large table at the center often hosts representatives from various city departments such as the Chief of Staff, Codes, Public Works, and the City Engineer. These officials provide updates and assist the council with legislative matters, offering insights that help in decision-making processes.

City Clerks
City clerks play a crucial role by preparing legislation for meetings and setting the agenda. Their organizational skills ensure that council meetings run smoothly and efficiently.

President of the Common Council
Elected every four years, the President presides over council meetings. Although they do not typically vote on legislation, they have the authority to break a tie in votes, ensuring fair and decisive outcomes.

Common Council Legal Advisor
Providing essential legal advice, this advisor helps guide the council through complex legal terrains during meetings. The legal advisor is available to answer questions from the council, facilitating informed and lawful decision-making.

Engage and Participate

Council meetings are open to the public, and your participation is highly encouraged. These sessions are your opportunity to see how decisions are made, voice your concerns, and interact with your representatives. Remember, these officials are here to work for you—let’s make the most of this process together.
